Namaste Nepalese Kitchen – Jaulo

Nepalese Food

Jaulo – Nepalese Stew

Reminiscing back to childhood meal times, brings up memories of Irish stew, shepherds pie and chicken soup. Homely and lovely comfort food.

Jaulo is the Nepalese version of  this hug in a bowl. Made using the Nepalese and Indian staples of Rice, Lentils, Garlic and Ginger, it is scrummy and the perfect dish when it’s raining outside or when you need something warm and satisfying.

Ingredients:

1 Cup – Red lentils or Moong Dal

1/3 Cup – Rice

1 or 2 Garlic cloves – finely chopped

Fresh root Ginger – Thumb size piece – finely chopped/grated

1 teaspoon – Turmeric

1/2 teaspoon – Garam Masala

Cumin seeds – pinch

Salt to taste

Optional – Veg or Chicken stock

4 – 5 Cups – Water

Method:

Wash lentils/dal until the water runs clear (soak for about 30mins to reduce cooking time-optional)

Heat a little oil in a medium sized pot

Add the pinch of Cumin seeds and allow to cook for just a few seconds

Add the garlic and ginger & soften for a minute or so

Add lentils/dal and stir in

Add the Turmeric and Garam Masala. Stir together to combine ingredients and cook for 30 secs

Add the rice and again stir in

Add 4-5 cups of water (depending on how thirsty your lentils and rice are)

Add salt to taste (about 1 teaspoon)

Add veg or chicken stock if desired

Stir well and bring to the boil and simmer for 25 minutes or until the lentils and rice are well cooked.

Stir a few times during the cooking and add water if needed. Some people like this dish to be really thick and others prefer it to more thin, it’s up to you!

We like to have ours with a lovely spoonful of natural yogurt and a sprinkling of coriander leaves

Namaste And Enjoy!

Managing Stress

…Managing Stress by Julie-Anne Mullan

Would you like to be on a tropical beach now, listening to the sound of surf, seeing children play at sandcastles feeling the warm sun on your body?

Relax now, joyful in appreciation of the sights, sounds and smells of this island retreat. Grateful for friends, family, health. Happy to nurture your body, and nourish the soul….in peace!

As you bring your mind back to the here and now, notice, as you let in one single thought about your career, self-image, lifestyle, and now another, that as sure as Monday follows Sunday, if muscles tense, adrenalin kicks in, your heart races……. you know you are in stress!

Do you know that normal levels of stress and relaxation combine to keep the body in balance and sustain us? Well, we need a bit of adrenalin (a stress hormone) to get us up in the morning when the alarm goes off, or we’d never get the kids to school, be in time for that meeting or catch a sale deal in one of the big stores. At best it could save your life to be alert and step out of the way of an oncoming bus. It happened to me, so I know!

Take stock now, for a moment. Are you physically exhausted? Feeling demoralised by the daily grind, doing your best to get through the day with sugar hits and coffee? If so, did you know that your adrenalin production is being maintained at an abnormally high level? And that this can lead to health problems?

Most people don’t recognise that they are ‘Stressed’. But most of us are.

Answer these questions as honestly as you can:

  1. Is there anything in your life that is causing you to feel under pressure or Stressed?
  2. Is this situation ongoing or temporary?
  3. Is there anything from your past that is still effecting you emotionally?
  4. Is there addictive behaviour? (Think! This could include studiously watching TV for hours, checking emails a hundred times a day, eating more than the required daily intake for your needs)

Before you get depressed reading your answers, don’t be hard on yourself! Everyone suffers from the effects of stress at some point. It’s a symptom of modern life.

However, if you feel that the effects are on-going and you think you could benefit from professional advice, firstly go speak to your GP, then learn how to manage your stress and how to relax. There’s plenty of professional help available across the Allopathic Medical field and the Natural and alternative approaches.

Often it is because we haven’t got the balance right.  So we need to continually detox, physically and mentally. We process food, thoughts, and all forms of energy. When that flow is continuous and clear, we are steady and flexible. The trouble is that we accumulate more than we process. We become weighed down under the ash of metabolism and the remnants of old emotions.

Detoxification, from a yogic perspective, is a process of cleansing and purifying the body, mind, and energy systems. It involves removing accumulated toxins and impurities that hinder the free flow of vital energy, known as prana. The practice of detoxing, combined with a healthy vegetarian diet, offers several benefits in the context of yoga.

Physically, detoxing helps to eliminate toxins and waste materials from the body, improving overall health and vitality. It supports the proper functioning of organs, enhances the immune system, and boosts metabolism. By eliminating toxins, the body becomes lighter, more energised, and better prepared for the practice of yoga asanas. Detoxing also promotes healthy digestion, absorption, and assimilation of nutrients, which are essential for optimal physical well-being.

From a mental perspective, detoxing facilitates the purification of the mind. Through the removal of physical toxins, mental clarity and focus are enhanced, allowing for deeper concentration during meditation and yogic practices. Detoxing also helps to reduce mental and emotional blockages, freeing the mind from negative thought patterns and promoting a sense of calmness and inner peace. As the mind becomes clearer and more balanced, practitioners can experience heightened self-awareness and a deeper connection with their true selves.

In yogic terms, a healthy vegetarian diet plays a vital role in detoxification. A  diet, rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and plant-based proteins, provides essential nutrients while being light and easily digestible. It supports the body’s natural detoxification processes by supplying fiber, antioxidants, and phytonutrients that aid in the elimination of toxins. Additionally, a vegetarian diet aligns with the yogic principle of ahimsa (non-violence) by promoting compassion towards all living beings.

Detoxing and maintaining a healthy vegetarian diet are integral aspects of yogic practice. They support the purification of the body, mind, and energy systems, promoting optimal physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual growth. By embracing these practices, individuals can embark on a transformative journey towards holistic well-being and self-realisation.
